How much can the hotel cost per night?
Work out how much is left for the hotel once flights, transport and food are paid for, and what that means per night.

Take your total budget, subtract flights, local transport and food, then divide what is left by the number of nights. That figure is your ceiling per night. Keep about 10% back for city tax and fees you pay at the property, and you will not be caught out at check-out.
How we calculate
We subtract travel and food from the total budget and divide what is left by the number of nights. Food is counted per person per day, multiplied by travellers and nights.
The recommended maximum is 90% of that ceiling, leaving room for city tax, fees and an unplanned taxi. Every amount uses the currency you picked in the header.

- Should I budget per night or by total price?
- Set the budget per night, but compare hotels on the total price for the whole stay. Breakfast, city tax and one-off fees only show up once you add the nights together.
- How much buffer should I leave?
- Around 10% of the hotel budget covers the usual extras: city tax, resort fees, card charges abroad and the odd late taxi.
