The historic centre around the Graslei and Korenmarkt is compact and walkable, putting most hotels within reach of the castle, cathedral and canal-side restaurants. The Ghent Festival (Gentse Feesten) in July brings large crowds and higher prices, while the rest of the year is markedly quieter than Bruges.
Best time to visit: April to June and September, avoiding the Ghent Festival in July unless attending it.
