Cheap hotels in Barcelona: where to stay on a budget
Barcelona is not a cheap hotel city, but the price gap between neighbourhoods is large and the metro is fast enough that staying outside the old town costs you very little time. This guide covers the districts worth booking, when prices actually fall, and how to compare offers properly.

The best-value hotels in Barcelona are in Sant Antoni, Poble-sec, Esquerra de l'Eixample and Poblenou — all within a short metro ride of the centre and clearly cheaper than the Gothic Quarter or Passeig de Gràcia. Travel midweek, avoid trade-fair weeks, and compare the total for the whole stay including the tourist taxes added at the hotel.
Where the value is
Sant Antoni has become one of the best-value central areas: a renovated market, good restaurants, and a five-minute walk to the Rambla. Poble-sec, below Montjuïc, is similar and slightly cheaper.
Esquerra de l'Eixample — the left half of the grid — has the same architecture and metro access as the expensive side at a lower price, and plenty of mid-range hotels with terraces.
Poblenou and Sants are the budget options with real infrastructure: newer hotels, quiet streets, and direct metro or train links into the centre. Gràcia sits in between: lovely, local, and moderately priced.
When Barcelona is cheap
November to March, excluding Christmas and New Year, is low season and the difference is substantial. Late June to August is hot and busy but weekday rates are sometimes softer than in the pleasant shoulder months, when weekend city breaks fill the city.
Whatever the month, weekday nights beat weekend nights, and the week either side of a big congress can be dramatically cheaper than the congress week itself.
What to check before booking
Air conditioning in summer, an interior-facing room if you are near a bar street, and how the hotel handles breakfast. Many cheaper Barcelona hotels are in old buildings with small lifts and no restaurant — fine, as long as you know before arrival.

1. Move one metro stop out
Sant Antoni and Poble-sec sit right behind the Rambla but price like outer districts. Esquerra de l'Eixample is the same grid as the expensive half at a lower rate. Poblenou is newer, quieter and cheaper again, ten minutes by metro.
2. Travel midweek
Sunday to Thursday is consistently cheaper than Friday and Saturday in Barcelona, and the difference over three nights is usually larger than any discount code.
3. Check the fair calendar
Mobile World Congress and the larger congresses fill the city and lift prices everywhere for a week. Shifting your dates by seven days can change the total more than changing hotel.
4. Compare the total, not the nightly rate

5. Book refundable, then re-check
